Trenta Valley
Because of its untamed wildness, the upper Soèa
draws white-water rafting, kayaking, and canoeing enthusiasts and its famous marbled Soča trout attracts many fishermen.
Established by Albert Bois de Chesne in 1926, Slovenia’s only alpine botanical garden, Alpinum Julianum, lies close to Bovec in the Trenta Valley in the Primorska part of Triglav National Park. About 1000 species of plants from the Julian Alps, the Kamniške Alps, the Karavanke Mountains, the subalpine hills, and the karst region can be seen here.
Another attraction of this region, the Bovec kluže, can be found above Bovec in the narrow gorge of the Koritnica River. Kluže are special dams that once blocked the path of torrential streams to form pools through which lumbermen rafted wood cut in the higher-lying forests.
The medieval fortresses of Trdnjava Kluže and Fort
Hermann deserve special mention as cultural and
historical monuments. Because of their strategic position in this pass between Italy and Austria, military garrisons were stationed here as early as the l0th century. |
