Lussari Mount - Italy

The Lussari mount is a jewel of incomparable beauty, here you can see the wonderful natural scene of majestic and high tops. This place is not only an important naturalistic site, but also a Sanctuary, the Sanctuary that joins the Slavic, Italian and German ethnic stocks. In the 16th. Century the mount was already destination of pilgrimages of the three people; today it can undoubtedly come considered as an european Sanctuary.

According to an ancient tradition, in 1360 a shepherdesses of Camporosso lost his sheps, that he found shortly after around a bush of pine.

With great wonder he noticed that in the center of the bush there was a little statue of Madonna with the Baby.He taken the statue and bring it downstream and carried it to the Parish priest of Camporosso. The following morning but the statue came found newly on the Lussari, newly surrounded from the sheep knelt down. Such episode was repeated another time. The Parish priest therefore informed about the fact the Patriarch of Aquileia; he ordered that on the place in which was found the statue it came constructed a chapel.

Today the original chapel there is no more; It came instead replaced in 1500 by the actual chorus; made all in stone, as the vault. In 1760 the community of Slovenian believers celebrated the fourth centenary of the Sanctuary.

In 1786 Emperor od Austria, Giuseppe the second, prohibited the celebration of whichever religious function inside the chirch. It was closed, the inside was stripped of all the sacred objects and the pilgrimages were prohibited. But in 1790 the successor, his brother Leopoldo, cancelled the decree: The Madonna could therefore return in its dwelling on the Lussari mount.

In 1807 a lighting hit and destroyed the wooden part of the church; the industrious believers rebuilded but it in a short time, widening it. In 1915 the Sanctuary was in the combat lines of the Great war. The 16 September a bomb was launched against the church caused a fire, which destroyed it. Under order of the Parish priest, Padre Pio, the statue was carried out downhill from the keeper of the church, Giovanni Kravina.
From the day of Pentacost to month of July it came conserved in the presbitery of Camporosso. Later was carried out to villach, Klagenfurt andin Maribor, in the basilica of the “Madonna delle Grazie”. In september 1920, it was carried out in the Church of the Pilgrims of the Saint Cross in Davograd. In August of the successive year, finally, it could return to Camporosso. On 24 June 1925 it returned in the small church in on the Mount, that was meanwhile reconstructed.
Also during the world-wide conflict the Sanctuary remained closed. The Virgin Maria was transported in the presbitery of Camporosso, where remained from August 1943 until 11 August 1945, when it was take back in its home on Lussari. In 1960 was celebrated the sixth anniversary of the Sanctuary. In that occasion the church was restaured and started a lot of jobs to rennovate the houses of the Sanctuary. The most important restoration coincides with the Jubilee of 2000. Were esecuted a lot of maintenance works of the Sanctuary and the presbitery was completely renew.

The Lussari has been always the place of pilgrimage for excellence for the slovenian population. The inside of the church hold valuables paintings, those was painted by the Slovenian painter Tone Kralj. There is “The representation of the Comforting Madonna of the plagued”, “The Annunciation”, “The Escape in Egypt”,”Jesus twelve-year-old in the Temple”,”Maria who pray under the Cross” and the “Coronation” of the Virgin”. The season of the summery pilgrimages starts in June and finishes the first sunday of october.

Stanjel – the jewel of the Karst region

The Romans turned the top of the hill into an ancient fort, in the Middle Ages the village expanded over the hill, and later on the settlement was enclosed by defence walls to protect it against Turks invasions.

However, the most dominant features of the village are the Castle and the Church of Saint Daniel, which make Stanjel so remarkable. While walking through the narrow streets, the houses built in stone are telling you the story of stonemasons, who portrayed their experience of the Karst through stone. The streets end up in small squares, which were once popular meeting places for the youth and elderly.

Late Gothic St. Danijel's church was built in the second half of 15th century. Later, in the 17th century, particularly outstanding church tower was built. In its interior there is very interesting marble slab on the high-altar showing the image of the castle at the end of the 17th century. However parish Saint Daniel's church has two succoursal churches: The St. Gregory church and the church of St. Joseph.

Badly damaged during the Second World War, the part of the castle has been restored. The oldest remains of the castle reach back into the Middle Ages. In that time the castle was owned by the Counts of Gorica, then by the Cobenzls, and later on the ownership passed on to many others. In the 17th century it was rebuilt into a renaissance and baroque residence.

The Karst people always had to cope with the problem of the shortage of drinking water. A proof for that is also Stanjel with its numerous stone wells built in the squares. Very interesting is also the Romanic or Karst House with its ethnological collection.

You can experience the Karst from a different perspective in the renovated part of the castle. The castle's halls, where you can meet bridegrooms and brides on Saturdays, host a collection of the recognized painter and graphic Lojze Spacal.

While walking through the streets, you are also invited to visit the gallery in the exhibition tower with the gateway to Kobdilj and the small gifts’ shop. A very interesting passage from the stone village to the green surroundings is represented by Ferrari's Garden, a unique masterpiece of the architect Max Fabiani. You can continue your walk from Ferrari's Garden to Kobdilj on a path named after Max Fabiani, discovering the beauty of green surroundings.

Tower with gateway to Kobdilj became part of the Villa Ferrari in 1928. Enrico Ferrari was a well-known doctor from Italy, Trieste. There was a dining room on the first floor and a beautiful terrace on the roof. In 1944 the tower was half ruined. It has been restored and today there is a gallery in it with exhibitions and a souvenir shop on the ground floor.
