| Lazienki Palace |

Lazienki Palace is located on the lake in Lazienki Park, the largest park in Warsaw, sitting on 80 hectares of land in the middle of the city. The park lies in the part of the city known as the so-called “king’s tract”. In the north the park borders Ujazdowski Castle.
The garden was established in the 17th century by Tylman van Gameren, in baroque style, for Ujazdów Stanislaw Lubomirski. It acquired its name from a bath pavilion which was established at that time. In 1764, the year that he was chosen to become the King of Poland, Stanislaw August Poniatowski acquired the castle garden.
The design of this classical garden became the life work of Stanislaw August. The park was created by Dominik Merlini, Johann Christian Kamsetzer, and the landscape gardener Jan Christian Schuch. The most important buildings are conceived around the Lazienki lake and Lazienki river. It is designed as a “palace on the water”.
Most of the buildings were burnt to the ground during and after the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, during fighting between the German, Polish, and Soviet forces. However, the structural fabric remained relatively well-preserved in comparison to the Old Town, and reconstruction of the park was completed a few years after the end of the war.
