MARITIME TRAVEL

Vessels arriving in the territorial waters of Slovenia from abroad may land only at the docks of the international border crossings in Koper, Piran and in Izola (seasonal border crossing). Upon mooring the vessel, the vessel, its crew, and the passengers must be registered with the border authorities. The following documents are needed for the procedure: the original documents for the vessel (proof of ownership of the vessel or authorization for its use), the captain's certificate of qualification to operate the vessel and identity documents of people on the vessel.

Visitors with permanent residence abroad may temporarily import a private vessel which is registered abroad exempt from paying customs duties. In the event that the yacht certificate is not valid they may apply for an examination at the Koper Harbourmaster. When the vessel which is taken by land enters the teriritorial waters of Slovenia it must be registered with the Maritime Administration of the Republic of Slovenia or with the Customs Office.

The Piran bay is a friendly starting point for excursions across the Adriatic. On the Slovene coast of the Adriatic there are modern marinas in Portorož, Koper and Izola (in Izola there is also a special Yacht Center for technical services) available to the nautical tourist – they all received the Blue Flag European sign for ecology. All marinas provide fuel supply, and the fuel stations are also at public piers in Piran and Izola. All through the year two marine border crossings are open in Koper and Piran, and from May to October the border crossing in Izola.

Documents required for arrival by car

Foreign drivers, those from the EU as well as those outside it, need valid car registration and insurance, for the vehicle being driven.

We suggest that before they intend to travel, drivers from the EU also obtain a green card issued by their insurance company, as in the event of a car accident, it facilitates the procedure of data exchange. The green card is obligatory for drivers not from EU member countries.

Travel by motorhome

The driver needs to have a licence of the applicable category for the vehicle being driven, all passengers have to sit in adequate seats during travel and wear seatbelts. Other documents required are the same as for personal passenger vehicles. For transport of additional cargo on the roof or at the rear of the vehicle, the requirements are the same as for personal passenger vehicles – cargo may extend past the extreme front of the vehicle up to a maximum of 1 m, and may extend up to a maximum length of 1.5 m at the rear at the vehicle, however the total length of the vehicle with cargo must not exceed 12 m. If the cargo at the rear of the vehicle extends more than 1 m behind the vehicle it must be marked with a square board, 25x25 cm, with oblique red/white stripes.

Overnight stops are permitted at special rest areas for motorhomes, which you can find HERE, or in camp grounds.
